Why UTC +5:30 has that weird half hour

Most of the world sits evenly on the hour. You're UTC +4 or you're UTC +6. It's clean. It makes sense. Then there's India sitting right at UTC +5:30.
Why the thirty minutes?
So the problem is geography. When they were standardizing time in the early 1900s, the British government realized the country was massive. They actually had two time zones originally, Bombay Time and Calcutta Time. But that was a mess for the railways. Trains were crashing. Timetables were useless.
They needed a single meridian line to anchor the whole country. They drew a line right down the middle, straight through an observatory in Mirzapur.
Wait — this matters. That specific observatory is exactly 82.5 degrees east of Greenwich. Since every 15 degrees of longitude equals one hour, 82.5 degrees equals exactly five and a half hours.
It wasn't a mistake. It wasn't them just trying to be different. It's literally the geographical center of the country carved down to the exact degree.
I think it's brilliant. Annoying for developers coding timestamps, sure. But it's precise. Though honestly when you're writing server logs and you forget to add that trailing thirty minutes to your offset calculation, you break the entire database for the day. Which I've done.
